433 MHz vs 868 MHz

433 MHz is widely used for older switches, sensors, weather stations and blinds. 868 MHz is often used for specific ventilation, security and sensor applications.

What does this mean in practice?

433 MHz is widely used for older switches, sensors, weather stations and blinds. 868 MHz is often used for specific ventilation, security and sensor applications.

RFXCOM is often used to connect existing wireless devices to modern smart-home systems. The main advantage is that existing 433 MHz or 868 MHz devices do not have to be replaced immediately. You use the RFX as a bridge between RF devices, MQTT and systems such as Home Assistant.

When is this relevant?

  • You want to keep using existing sensors, switches, motors or weather stations.
  • You want to connect devices to Home Assistant, Node-RED, Domoticz or custom software.
  • You are looking for clear information about protocols, frequencies, compatibility or firmware.

Best practice

Enable only the protocols you need, use a stable power supply, give every RFX a unique Hostname/MQTT Client name and always check whether motors use rolling codes. Enable Auto Discovery temporarily while adding devices and disable it afterwards.
